Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has raised serious questions about the private clinic where Giorgos Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest and subsequently died.

In a post, Georgiadis referred to the facility as an “alleged clinic” and said that, in reality, it held a license for a general internal medicine practice. According to the minister, such a facility is not authorized to perform a medical procedure such as plasmapheresis, which Mazonakis was reportedly scheduled to undergo.

Georgiadis also revealed that an investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident has already been launched by the president of the Athens Medical Association.

“The exact cause of his death will, of course, be established by the forensic investigation, as will whether anyone bears responsibility and, if so, who,” he said.

He also urged patients to exercise caution regarding information they encounter online and not to put their health at risk in questionable circumstances.

Georgiadis calls for investigation

In his statement, Georgiadis wrote:

“According to the initial information, Giorgos Mazonakis suffered cardiac arrest at an alleged clinic while undergoing a procedure reportedly described as plasmapheresis. The exact cause of his death will, of course, be established by the forensic investigation, as will whether anyone bears responsibility and, if so, who.

“However, we have a duty to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident. In reality, the facility was licensed only as a general internal medicine practice, and such a practice is not authorized to perform a medical procedure of this kind.

“I asked the President of the Athens Medical Association to immediately carry out the required inspection, as the authority to inspect medical practices lies with the respective local Medical Associations. The inspection process has already begun.

“In any case, I urge patients to be cautious about what they read online and not to put their health at risk in questionable circumstances. I extend my sincere condolences to his family and his thousands of friends.”

What is the Stem Cell clinic?

The clinic’s medical focus is also of particular interest. According to information published on its website, the facility “focuses on the intersection of medical science and emerging regenerative medicine technologies.”

The clinic is headed by Dr. Ilias Theodoropoulos, a physician specializing in internal medicine who has conducted research in the field of hematology.

According to information published by the clinic, Dr. Theodoropoulos has devoted his professional career to developing a comprehensive approach to healthcare that combines scientific knowledge with modern therapeutic practices.

Greek police investigate Mazonakis’ death

The Athens Security Subdivision of the Hellenic Police (ELAS) has taken over the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Giorgos Mazonakis’ death.

The Organized Crime Division, also known as the Greek FBI, is also expected to assist with the investigation to determine whether any criminal offenses were committed.

The first person summoned to give a statement was the doctor who owns the clinic where the singer suffered cardiac arrest.

As part of the investigation, statements are expected to be taken from everyone who had contact with Mazonakis, both before he went to the clinic and while he was there, as well as from those involved after his transfer to Elpis Hospital.

The case file is expected to include records of the medical procedures performed, along with the forensic report that will follow the post-mortem examination and autopsy.

Timeline of events

According to the information released so far, Giorgos Mazonakis went to the Stem Cell clinic at 11 Karneadou Street in Kolonaki on Wednesday afternoon.

He had reportedly attended an initial appointment the previous day before returning for a scheduled plasmapheresis treatment. The procedure was reportedly arranged in light of the singer’s numerous professional commitments.

According to the information currently available, Mazonakis experienced severe chest pain after an intravenous catheter was inserted and subsequently suffered cardiac arrest.

The clinic called Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB), informing emergency services that the popular singer had suffered a cardiac episode.

The call was made at 4:21 p.m.

Seven minutes later, at 4:28 p.m., an EKAB paramedic arrived by motorcycle and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

A few minutes later, an EKAB ambulance arrived and transported Mazonakis to Elpis Hospital, the nearest hospital on duty. He arrived at 4:45 p.m.

CPR and resuscitation efforts continued in the hospital’s Emergency Department. However, the efforts were unsuccessful, and his death was officially confirmed at 5:40 p.m.

Eyewitness account from Kolonaki

An eyewitness described seeing Mazonakis being taken from the clinic to the ambulance.

“They brought him down in a chair to put him into the ambulance. He was white—completely pale. I only saw a tattoo on his arm, an arrow. Later, I realized it was him. He had an oxygen device over his mouth. He wasn’t breathing. He was wearing a beige shirt,” the eyewitness said.

Statement from Elpis Hospital

In its official statement, Elpis Hospital said that Mazonakis arrived at 4:45 p.m. by EKAB ambulance without spontaneous breathing or a pulse.

Medical staff immediately performed CPR in accordance with the relevant protocol, but the resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. His death was officially confirmed at 5:40 p.m.
