Although Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber look remarkably alike, each has dealt with their resemblance in her own way.
For years, the 60-year-old model and her daughter have been compared for their striking looks, careers and sense of style. In a new interview with Porter magazine, Crawford said she enjoys the comparisons, while acknowledging that they may be more difficult for her daughter.
“It doesn’t bother me at all. I like it, but I don’t know what it’s like to have a famous parent. I think for Kaia, it’s simply part of who she is, and she’ll have to learn how to deal with it,” she said.
Speaking from her daughter’s perspective, Crawford added that the situation probably comes with both “perks” and frustrating aspects.
“There are definitely some perks, but there are probably also things that are annoying, and I’ve acknowledged that with her. I’m sure that sometimes it’s very difficult,” she said.
Beyond their physical resemblance, Crawford explained that there have been moments in their professional careers when they have been able to be seen as two separate individuals, particularly as Kaia has developed her own career.
“We’ve had some really special moments that, if I didn’t work in fashion, we wouldn’t have experienced. Like when we both walked in the Versace show in 2017. I wasn’t there as Kaia’s mother, and she wasn’t there as my daughter. She was there for her own reason and I was there for mine. We’ve had a few little moments like that. I love it whenever I get the chance to work with Kaia. It’s really fun,” she explained.
Kaia Gerber on Being Compared to Her Mother
In the September issue of Vogue, Kaia Gerber spoke about the difficulties of growing up under constant comparisons to her mother, particularly when it came to her body image.
“As someone who has been skinny for most of my life, I was always compared to my mom, with people saying things like, ‘What’s going on with Kaia?’” she said, explaining why she had often envied Crawford’s figure.
“I would have loved to have been born with a chest and curves. People always commented on my body, which is difficult because I’m not always ready to talk about my own body, you know?” she said, adding that she had struggled with disordered eating in the past.
“People say, ‘You look awful,’ and that doesn’t exactly make you think, ‘Great, let me overcome this mental illness!’ Negativity has never saved anyone’s life,” she concluded at the time.
