Doctor testifies on Giorgos Mazonakis’ final minutes at Kolonaki Stem Cell clinic

Ioanna Gaka told police she assured Giorgos Mazonakis the treatment was safe and insisted all equipment was certified, though the Athens and Panhellenic medical associations say the clinic's licence never covered treatments such as plasmapheresis

Giorgos Mazonakis suffered a cardiac arrest inside the Stem Cell clinic in Kolonaki, an upmarket district of central Athens, on Wednesday afternoon. His final minutes there were described by the clinic’s doctor, Ioanna Gaka, in her statement to police. Mazonakis, 54, was later pronounced dead that evening at Elpis General Hospital, where he had been taken by ambulance.

According to her account, Mazonakis had undergone an initial examination on Tuesday afternoon, which found that his body was under considerable strain. She said that during the conversation that followed, the singer struggled even to speak.

Gaka claimed that during the Tuesday visit, Mazonakis asked her what could be done immediately, since he had a public appearance scheduled in the coming days and wanted to improve his health quickly.

The doctor said she suggested a blood-purification procedure, later identified in her statement as plasmapheresis, using a specialist machine. She added that she told him the treatment carried no side effects or contraindications, and that he agreed to go ahead with it.

The following day, Wednesday, Mazonakis arrived at the clinic, according to Gaka’s statement. She claimed she noticed he had not slept and again observed a difficulty in his speech, saying he was not speaking clearly.

Describing the procedure she carried out, Gaka told police that a cannula was inserted into Mazonakis’ right arm, after which an attempt was made to insert a second cannula into his left arm, as she said the method required.

Gaka further claimed that up to that point the singer’s vital signs had been normal, with his blood pressure, oxygen levels and body temperature showing no problems. However, she said that as she was trying to complete the insertion of the second cannula, she noticed a sudden deterioration in his condition, with a drop in his blood pressure and oxygen levels.

She said the procedure was stopped immediately at that point and that she called her husband, Ilias Theodoropoulos, an internal medicine specialist and the clinic’s owner, with whom she began performing CPR on the singer. The National Centre for Emergency Care (EKAV) was alerted at the same time, with resuscitation efforts continuing until paramedics arrived.

In her statement, Gaka claimed that Mazonakis was still alive when he left the clinic, and also maintained that all the equipment there was certified, pledging to produce the necessary certificates.

It is understood, however, that Theodoropoulos denied any involvement in the incident, maintaining that his wife had full responsibility for running the practice, carried out the treatments and monitored patients.

Despite Gaka’s claims that the clinic had certified equipment, the president of the Athens Medical Association, Georgios Patoulis, and the president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, Matina Pagoni, both stated that the clinic held only a licence for general internal medicine practice, which does not cover treatments such as plasmapheresis. They said no such equipment was found during a licensing inspection carried out in 2025.
