Greece’s priorities ahead of its upcoming presidency of the United Nations Security Council were discussed by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis with the President of the UN General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting took place on Monday, September 21, with discussions focusing on the role Greece will play during its term on the Security Council in October 2026.

During the meeting, Mr. Gerapetritis outlined Athens’ key priorities ahead of assuming the presidency, stressing Greece’s determination to contribute actively to the Organization’s work and initiatives.

At the same time, the Foreign Minister highlighted Greece’s readiness to participate meaningfully in efforts to reform the United Nations, with the aim of strengthening the effectiveness of the international organization.

Emphasis on International Law and Multilateralism

During the meeting, George Gerapetritis reiterated Greece’s steadfast commitment to the principles of International Law and the fundamental provisions of the United Nations Charter.

As he noted, Athens places particular emphasis on safeguarding effective multilateralism and strengthening an international order based on principles and rules.
