Investigators from the Fire Service’s Directorate for the Investigation of Arson Crimes (DAEE) handling the case appear to be reaching the conclusion that the natural gas leak that caused the deadly explosion in the building in Plaka originated from the second-floor apartment where the elderly couple lived.

According to well-informed sources, the investigation of the central natural gas distribution network found no leak. The same sources explained that a pressure-tightness test was carried out on the pavement, and the central network was found to be sealed.

Based on the above, investigators estimate that the leak occurred inside the second-floor apartment—the only apartment connected to the network. There were three appliances connected to it: a stove, a fireplace and a water heater, although the exact point of the leak has not yet been identified.

Relatives of the Victims Arrive in Greece

It should be noted that yesterday (September 27), relatives of the victims of the deadly explosion in Plaka arrived in Greece at the invitation of the relevant authorities. The families will provide genetic material for DNA comparison in order to complete the process of identifying the bodies.

It is recalled that Florinda Hoxha and her husband, Ian Alexander Kirkpatrick, Eris Tzani and her husband, Florin Hoxha, as well as the elderly couple Athina Papapareskou and Edmond Hings, lost their lives in the deadly explosion and subsequent collapse of the building on Lysikratous Street.
