Greece’s Civil Protection authorities are on heightened alert as severe weather affecting the country has placed several regions under a Red Code warning. Authorities are on standby to deal with potential flooding, while a new meeting of the Risk Assessment Committee has led to the extension of the measures to the Cyclades ahead of the 28 October national anniversary.

According to the committee’s scientists, rain and thunderstorms are expected mainly in central and southern Greece, with locally severe conditions forecast for Wednesday, 28 October, in Evia, Magnesia, the Sporades, the Dodecanese, Larissa, Skyros, Phthiotis, Boeotia, Attica, the Cyclades and the eastern Aegean.

Following the committee’s meeting, and based on the updated Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena issued by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS), the Cyclades regional units in the South Aegean Region have also been placed under Red Code alert for Wednesday, 28 October 2026, owing to the high risk of flooding.

It is recalled that, since Monday, 26 October, the following areas have already been under Red Code alert until Thursday, 29 October 2026:

  • The regional units of Evia, Phthiotis and Boeotia in the Central Greece Region.
  • The regional units of the Sporades, Magnesia and Larissa in the Thessaly Region.
  • The Attica Region.
  • The regional units of the Dodecanese in the South Aegean Region.
  • The North Aegean Region.

Under the Red Code alert, the National Civil Protection Mechanism is being placed on full readiness, with the necessary personnel and available resources mobilised to prevent emergencies, respond to incidents immediately and manage the potential consequences of severe weather.

The South Aegean Region and the relevant municipalities in the Cyclades have also been called on to convene their Regional and Local Civil Protection Operational Coordination Bodies (PESOPP and TESOPP) immediately, to ensure the necessary coordination and operational readiness to deal with possible flooding.
