Secondary school students witnessed an unusual sight on Tuesday evening at the beach in Amfilochia, when they spotted a shark swimming very close to the shore and recorded it on video.
The footage shows the marine animal moving along the coastline and changing direction, with the outline of its body and fins visible beneath the light reflecting on the water.
Amfilochia: Sandbar shark spotted swimming along the beach
The exact species has not yet been confirmed by an expert. Some visible characteristics suggest it may be a sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus). However, the nighttime footage and the recording angle do not allow for a definitive identification.
The presence of sharks in the Ambracian Gulf has been documented. According to data from environmental organisation iSea, both the dusky shark and the sandbar shark are found in the gulf, as part of research into the sharks and rays inhabiting the area.
