The Democrats have formally secured control of the United States Senate following the unexpected electoral victory of Josh Turek in Iowa, completing a series of significant upsets in states traditionally regarded as Republican strongholds.

By securing a majority in the Senate, Democrats will now be able to exert considerable influence over the legislative process and the decisions of the Trump administration during the final two years of his second presidential term.

The victory in Iowa followed Democratic wins in Kansas, Texas and South Carolina, with the party gaining a total of six seats from Republicans in the upper chamber of Congress.

The scale of the electoral gains is such that Democrats could now afford to lose even the two seats they are defending in Michigan and Minnesota without surrendering their Senate majority.

Historic upset in Texas

One of the Democrats’ most significant victories came in Texas, where James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton by a substantial margin. Paxton was the candidate endorsed by Donald Trump.

The result marks a historic development for the state, as Democrats had not won a statewide elected office in Texas for more than 30 years.

Talarico’s victory therefore signals a major shift in the electoral balance in a state that for decades has been a key pillar of Republican electoral strength.

Trump’s chosen candidate defeated in South Carolina

Another significant victory was secured by Democrat Annie Andrews in South Carolina, where she defeated incumbent Republican Senator Darlene Graham.

Graham had been personally selected by Donald Trump to replace her brother, Lindsey Graham, who died earlier this year.

The electoral upset takes on particular significance given that Trump won South Carolina by an 18-percentage-point margin in the 2024 presidential election.

Sherrod Brown returns to the Senate in Ohio

In Ohio, Democrat Sherrod Brown secured his return to the Senate, winning a seat that had been held two years ago by the current vice-president of the United States, JD Vance.

Brown’s victory represents another significant success for Democrats, who managed to take seats from Republicans in states where Trump’s party had performed strongly in the previous elections.

Major upset in Kansas

In Kansas, where Trump won by a 16-percentage-point margin in 2024, Democrats also secured a significant electoral victory, further strengthening their gains in the Senate.

The result provides another indication of the scale of the electoral shifts, as Kansas is among the states with a long tradition of support for the Republican Party.

Overall, the Democrats’ victories in states where Donald Trump had won by substantial margins just two years earlier reflect the extent of the shift in political balance in this year’s midterm elections.

Democrats gain the power to block Trump’s appointments

The Democrats’ regaining control of the Senate will give them the ability to block appointments put forward by Donald Trump, while also providing them with considerable bargaining power in disputes over federal spending, which have characterised much of his second presidential term.

With a majority in the upper chamber of Congress, Democrats will be able to prevent the confirmation of candidates nominated by the White House for key government and other federal positions, limiting Trump’s ability to advance his choices.

They are also expected to play a stronger role in negotiations over the federal budget and funding for key government policies.

Democrats have already made clear that they do not intend to approve additional funding for the war in Iran or for the strict immigration policy and operations targeting illegal immigration being pursued by the Trump administration.
