The Hellenic Air Force, a key pillar of Greece’s national defence, is entering a new era, with state-of-the-art fifth-generation fighter aircraft, advanced anti-aircraft and anti-missile systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
This was among the points highlighted by Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias in a post on the social media platform X, marking the day of the celebration of the Hellenic Air Force’s patron saint, Archangel Michael.
“Warm wishes to the pilots who defend our national sovereignty in the skies every day, as well as to all the men and women of the Hellenic Air Force, on the feast day of their patron saint, Archangel Michael,” the minister said.
He noted that “three KC-390 Millennium aircraft will soon be added to the modernised transport fleet, providing it with new operational capabilities through aerial refuelling”.
He also stressed: “For the first time, Greece will also have a presence in space, with the forthcoming launch of the Space Command and the integration of a series of satellites into operational planning, as well as the establishment of national control over our communications.”
“The most valuable asset of the Hellenic Air Force, however, is its personnel. They serve as a shield for the country and as an invaluable source of support for Greek society through air medical evacuation, search and rescue, and aerial firefighting missions, wherever and whenever required,” the Minister of National Defence emphasised.
“Today, in particular, our thoughts turn with respect and gratitude to those who took off to defend the Homeland and never returned to land. ‘Αιέν Υψικρατείν’ (Ever to Excel in the Heights),” Mr Dendias concluded.
