5,000 people eat rejected food in Thessaloniki

Delicious food from rejected produce was aimed at making people more aware of food waste as part of the global Feeding5000 campaign

More than two tons of fruit and vegetables rejected because of the way they looked were cooked in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, and offered for free to 5,000 people on Sunday in an effort to highlight food waste in advanced societies. People lined up to eat Briam, a traditional Greek vegetable casserole, as well as crepes and fruit salad.

The event, part of the global Feeding5000 campaign, is aimed at making people more aware of food waste and realizing that much of the food that is thrown away is perfectly edible. Figures show that 30% of the annual global food production is lost or wasted.
