6,500 redundancies in the public sector to be discussed once more

After the Troika’s pressure

The Troika representatives are reaching Athens today for their meeting with Minister of Administrative Reform Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, ready to reopen the issue of the dismissal of 6500 public sector employees and require the Greek government to submit a list of institutions which will be forced to reduce their staff.

Even though the close environment of Mr. Mitsotakis states that there are no prerequisites concerning the ministry, the Memorandum provides that during the 2013-2014 period there will be 15,000 redundancies made. There will be 6,500 more layoffs and the government should immediately make plans for the next six months.

On the “hot” front of the dismissals from the Ministry of Administrative Reform, they warn that lenders will not raise the issue of 5000 layoffs for 2014, and beyond the removal of 15000 employees pre-agreed upon for 2014, there will be no more redundancies associates with a quantitative target and availability.

The 2014 layoffs are expected to begin in September and be completed by December, after hearings have been held for the cases involving the removal of 500 civil servants, on perjury. There is further research underway by the House of Auditors of Public Administration to identify employees who have been appointed and are working with forged certificates.
