The players and friends of West Ham bid the young man farewell in their own way.
The Greek-Australian passed away on Good Friday after a long battle with testicular cancer and early on the morning of Holy Saturday, the fans started leaving flowers and other tributes in his memory around the “Upton Park” stadium.
Prior to kick-off, a moment of silence was observed, while the stadium’s matrix screens showed photos of Tombides. The administration of the English club announced that the No 38 jersey, which he wore, would be retired in his honor. In an emotional scene, Tombides’s father and brother, who were present at the ceremony, carried his jersey to the middle of the ground while the stadium applauded.
