How to survive a nuclear Holocaust (vid)

Preparing for the consequences of nuclear warfare

Newsroom December 3 10:40

With tensions mounting high concerning world peace with strike action in Syria being amped following the Paris attacks and the downing of the Russian fighter jet by Turkey, many people are beginning to fear the start of World War Three.

The nuclear weapons exist so there’s always a likelihood of a nuclear holocaust.

In that case, is there anything you can do to increase your chances of survival?

* You will probably be killed if the nuclear missile hits you at Ground Zero. The thermal energy is so intense that infrastructure and humans are incinerated. The only underground bunkers and car parks to be destroyed would be the ones where there is a deep bunker that offers blast protection.

*  Chances of survival increase if you are a few miles away from the attack. The first thing you would see would be a bright flash in the distance visible from a distance of 10 miles. The blast would then overpressure you allowing you 10-15 seconds to dart for cover. Most of the damage at this point would come from collapsing buildings and winds at 600 mph. Just make sure you find shelter to protect you from the fallout.

* While seeking cover take off all your clothes, especially those made of flammable materials as these will ignite from the thermal blast.

* Another thing to do is to keep your mouth open to stop your eardrums from bursting.

* If you manage to survive the blast, you will have 10 to 20 minutes before radiation comes falling down from the mushroom cloud created by the nuclear blast. The radiation is lethal and will come straight down within 20 minutes. Within 24 hours the lethal radiation will be carried by winds. The best place to hide would in a basement as deep as possible or somewhere higher than the ninth floor.

* Have you found shelter? Good! Stay there for around ten days as it won’t be safe to venture out for food. During this time ensure that food is rationed and there is lots of clothing to prevent the skin being subject to radiation. Do you have burns? Don’t break blisters. Instead wash the area.

* After 10 days venture outside. Eat processed foods provided the cans aren’t punctured.
