Tipping in Greece

The best tippers are U.S. visitors to Greece

Newsroom July 2 11:34

Tourists leave around 100 million euros worth of tips to employees working in Greek hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related services, says travel website Tripadvisers. The survey that questioned 25,000 foreign visitors to Greece found that over half of them leave tips during their holidays.

It was found that the best tippers were Americans who are more likely to tip out of obligation even when the service is lousy or substandard. 60% of people from the U.S. left tips, followed by 49% of Germans, 33% of Brazilians, 30% of Spaniards, 28% of Russians and 26% of Brits. The least generous were French and Italian tourists with only 15% and 11% tipping respectively.

97% of the U.S. visitors questioned left tips at restaurants and tavernas, 81% to taxi drivers and 79% giving tips to hotel porters. The least likely to get tips are employees at hotel gyms or swimming pools with only 2% of U.S. tourists tipping for these services.

Tips about tipping in Greece

An additional tip is not obligatory but it is common to round off the amount, especially when paying in cash.Tips can be left on the table, or you can tell the person providing the service to keep the change. It is customary to leave a 10-15% tip.

Bear in mind, that though tipping in Greece is optional, most of the waiting staff rely on their tips as wages can be low in Greece. There are restaurant owners that don’t allow their staff to keep tips.
