Maziotis’ partner tried to set him free

She attempted to land a helicopter on Korydallos prison to help him escape

Newsroom February 22 09:47

Nikos Maziotis, the leader of the Revolutionary Struggle guerrilla group, sentenced to 50 years in prison, attempted to escape from Korydallos prison.

According to reports, a helicopter carrying probably his partner Paula Roupa, attempted to land on Korydallos prison to help him escape. The helicopter, though, did not reach the destination, as police sources said, since the pilot reacted instantly when he realized that his plane could be used for an illegal purpose.

The helicopter was rented by a woman who looked like Paula Roupa and took off from a hotel in Hermione in Argolida heading to Thebes.

Describing the incident in an announcement, anti-terror police said that the helicopter was near Athens, when the woman pulled out a gun and told the pilot to redirect the aircraft towards the city.

The pilot immediately tried to disarm the woman which caused him to lose control of the helicopter and start to lose altitude. During the struggle, the woman shot him three times without injuring him.

Instead, the bullets pierced the instruments. Amazingly, the pilot managed to land the helicopter at an uninhabited mountainous area near the town of Thiva. The woman immediately opened the door and run away.

Anti-terror police found Roupa’s gun in the helicopter, along with a wig and more objects from which police are expecting to collect DNA data. According to the ballistics report, the gun found had been used by Maziotis in a bank robbery on 2014, during which a police officer was seriously injured. They have launched a manhunt to find Roupa, who is also wanted for the same crimes as her husband.
