Two explosions heard at Brussels airport before 8am local time with passengers evacuating the terminal.

An hour later, explosions hit Maalbeek metro station, close to the EU institutions, while the metro system and airport have both been closed.

According to information, one bomb exploded near American Airlines check-in. The explosions occurred in the airport and the metro station killed at least 28 and wounded more than 55 .

The Belgian prime minister, Charles Michael, has condemned the attacks as “blind, violent and cowardly” adding “We must face this challenge in solidarity, united, together.”

Belgium’s federal prosecutor has confirmed that the explosions at Brussels airport were carried out by a suicide bomber, according to broadcasters VTM and RTBF reported.

Belgium’s Het Laatste Nieuws reports that more bombs have been found, while the Belga news agency says that shots were fired and shouts in Arabic were heard before the two explosions.

Belgian authorities have raised the security alert to the highest level following blasts at the Zaventem Airport and Maalbeek Metro station, as RT reports.

Due to the current security situation in Brussels, the city’s transport authority has closed all public transport services.

Images and videos posted on social media by passengers show smoke rising from terminal building.

The explosion has left several dead and wounded, Belgian Federal Police spokesman said to NBC News.

Eurocontrol announed the airport will be closed to flights, while rail transport to the facility has been halted.
