The first photo of an inauguration ever

A few years before the American Civil War

According to TIME magazine the first photograph of an inauguration is that of James Buchanan’s on March 4th 1857.

The photograph was taken by John Wood who was standing on a platform and the President was standing on the stairs of the Congress.

In the next years, Wood followed the US army during the American Civil War.

James Buchanan was the 15th American President and he was succeeded by Abraham Lincoln.
