Hate groups are flourishing across the United States, according to a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Nationwide, the SPLC identified 917 hate groups last year, an increase on 892 in 2015. The number of anti-Muslim groups in particular has risen steeply, almost tripling from 34 in 2015 to 101 in 2016.
Only 457 hate groups existed in the U.S. back in 1999 and their numbers hit an all-time high of 1,018 in 2011. White supremacy is still alive and well in America despite the number of KKK chapters falling 32 percent in 2016. Out of the 917 groups identified by the SPLC, 130 were KKK, 100 were white nationalist, 99 were neo-Nazi and 78 were racist skinhead.
