Greek PM Tsipras met with German Chancellor Merkel on EU Summit sidelines

Two leaders talked about FYROM name dispute

Newsroom February 23 02:31

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the Brussels EU Summit, Thursday.
According to sources in the Greek government, Mr Tsipras reiterated the determination of the Greek government to establish a stable, viable and mutually acceptable solution to the name dispute with FYROM that would promote the use of a name for all uses (erga omnes).

The same sources said that the discussion focused on the results of the recent visit by FYROM’s PM Zoran Zaev to Germany with Chancellor Merkel continuing to urge the leadership in FYROM to find a solution. It should be noted that two days ago, following her meeting with Mr Zaev in Berlin, Angela Merkel had expressed her conviction that the name issue would be resolved as both Athens and Skopje were so close. However, the chancellor used the term “Macedonia” ten times during the press conference to refer to the neighboring country.
On the sidelines of the EU’s Informal Summit, Mr. Tsipras is taking part in a four-day meeting with Mr Merkel, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
