The programme of Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall Camilla in Athens

Their visit is scheduled to take place over two days on 9 and 10 May

Newsroom April 17 08:44

Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall Camilla are set to make their official visit to Greece next month, and the program is coming together featuring a stay in the Greek capital and Crete.

Scheduled to take place over two days on 9 and 10 May, the plans will see Prince Charles and his wife pay their respects at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma Square.

To follow the Prince will meet with President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, while the Duchess pays a visit to the Kaisariani Monastery and a local shelter for women who have suffered abuse.

The couple are then scheduled to head to Palaio Faliro where they will visit the armoured cruiser Georgios Averof and Olympias, a reconstruction of an ancient Athenian trireme, followed by a tour of the Phaleron War Cemetery, where causalities of the Commonwealth that died during WWII and the Greek Civil War are buried.

Following a jam-packed program, their first day will conclude with an official state banquet.

On day two the royals will head to Heraklio, Crete.

There they will be given a guided tour of the Palace of Knossos, and have been invited to take part in a traditional Cretan glenti with food, drink, music and dance.

Despite the couple visiting Greece a number of times for leisure, invited by Mr Pavlopoulos, it is their first official visit to the country, and the first to be made by members of the British royal family since the 50s.
