Dendias-Cavusoglu: Armistice with Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting on June 14

The Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting will take place at the sidelines of the NATO Summit

Newsroom May 31 02:32

The joint statements of the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey were brief, after their meeting at the Hellenic Foreign Ministry, with the two sides obviously wanting to avoid an confrontation similar to that in Ankara, when Nikos Dendias had responded to the provocations of Mevlut Cavusoglu, resulting in the creation of a “mini” diplomatic incident.

With the Mitsotakis-Cavusoglu meeting having preceded, essentially setting the agenda, the two ministers discussed 25 points of economic cooperation, while also announcing the upcoming meeting of the Greek Prime Minister with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s at the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Brussels on 14 June.

At the same time, the two sides agreed on the recognition of all vaccination certificates, in order to facilitate travel from Turkey to Greece and vice versa.

Nikos Dendias initially spoke about a process of gradual normalization of relations between the two countries in the long run. As he said, a number of economic cooperation programs were agreed.

“Congratulations Mevlut for the success of Anadolu Efes”, the Greek Foreign Minister also said to his Turkish counterpart, referring to the conquest of the Euroleague by the Turkish team of Efes.

“Thank you very much dear friend Nikos Dendia” replied the Turkish Foreign Minister. “There were 25 agreed points of economic cooperation discussed in Kavala. He finds us completely in agreement and I would like to take this opportunity to say that there is political will from Turkey and we are happy to see political will on the part of Greece. We have agreed on the mutual recognition of vaccinations made with different vaccines,” he added.

“As my counterpart predicted, the meeting of the heads of state on the sidelines of the NATO Summit is planned. It is clear that there are many issues that are pending and need to be resolved, with respect for the Law and the common interests”, Mr. Cavusoglu underlined. “We want to continue our relations with Greece without conditions”, he concluded.
