The press conference of Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the conclusion of the EU Summit (Upd.)

The text of the Summit allows countries to notify the Commission if they want to take measures that would go against the current EU rules on the electricity market

Newsroom March 25 08:47

The EU Summit ended just minutes before 20:30′.

According to reports, the text of the Summit allows countries to notify the Commission if they want to take measures that would go against the current EU rules on the electricity market.

These measures must be temporary and not undermine the EU internal market – that is, create unfair competition between producers in different countries.

The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is currently giving a press conference on the conclusions of the EU Summit, after the completion of the work.
“We had a difficult discussion on energy issues,” he said, adding that an explicit reference was made in the text of conclusions on imposing a cap on gas prices in the wholesale market.
“We are deeply saddened by the fact that some countries have not aligned themselves with the rest of the West on sanctions and are thus reducing their effectiveness. I spoke with President Zelensky today. I invited him to address the Parliament, I believe that we will organize it in the coming days. I offered, in consultation with other countries, such as France, to organize a humanitarian mission to Mariupol”, the Prime Minister initially said.

He continued: “We had a difficult discussion on energy issues. We managed to have an explicit reference to the gas price ceilings in the wholesale market. The EU is committed to proposals for the electricity market. We are delighted to hear that Europe will be able to negotiate with major gas suppliers, such as the United States. It is a very important first step, which Greece supported from the first moment”.
“I think that, despite the difficulties and tensions that have existed and are quite common within the European Council, although the media are used to dramatizing them, we have reached common conclusions, which I think are satisfactory. The aim is not to finance Russia’s war. All European countries have intervened to keep prices down. The prices we see today are solely the fault of President Putin and the irrational, illegal invasion he has chosen to make in Ukraine”, he said.
“On Monday, I will convened a meeting to ensure the adequacy of food in our country”, he added, noting that there is no question of food adequacy in Greece.
