Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev died Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Gorbachev, who was the last leader of the Soviet Union and involved in negotiations to end the Cold War, died at the age of 91 at Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital, according to ABC News.

Gorbachev died after a “serious and long illness,” according to ABC News.

The Soviet leader forged relationships with the west, giving way to the demise of the Iron Curtain and ending the divide of Europe, according to Reuters. In 1990, Gorbachev received a Nobel Peace Prize for his accomplishments in Europe. He is also widely known for his efforts to reform communism.
