Eva Kaili free from electronic surveillance tag but with restrictive conditions

The MEP said she wants to resume her EP duties

Newsroom May 25 03:51

Greek MEP Eva Kaili has been released from electronic surveillance and is now free with restrictive conditions.

The decision was taken by the Belgian anti-corruption judge, while the prosecutor’s spokesman Eric Van Duyse said that the Greek MEP is free under judicial supervision.

This means that the MEP, who is accused of involvement in the Qatargate case, i.e. the scandal concerning the alleged corruption of members of the European Parliament, employees of the institutions and bodies of the European Union, on behalf of government officials of Qatar and Morocco, is not obliged now wear a wristband, a condition imposed upon her release from prison on April 14, 2023.

Her lawyers had previously announced that they would submit a relevant request, in order for her to be able to carry out her duties as a member of the European Parliament. Characteristically, her advocate Michalis Dimitrakopoulos had stated that “her immediate priorities are to return to her duties in the European Parliament”.

Eva Kaili was arrested in December 2022 in Brussels, as part of the investigation into the Qatargate scandal. She was released from prison on April 14, at which time she was placed under house arrest with an electronic tag. However, a spokesman for the Belgian public prosecutor’s office said the measure was not considered necessary to continue the investigation.
