Greek PM Mitsotakis is planning a visit to Israel

Athens on alert - The Prime Minister's contacts with foreign leaders are ongoing

Newsroom October 17 09:40

As the countdown in Israel for the prospect of a ground intervention in Gaza has started and while the European and American diplomacy addresses Jerusalem with a message of restraint towards the civilians of the region, the
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is communicating with the leaders of the area.

At the same time, according to reports, the scenario of a visit by the Prime Minister to Israel in the coming days should not be ruled out.

After all, the day before yesterday Mr. Mitsotakis had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu.

The prospect of a wider flare-up has raised the alarm at Maximos Palace and tomorrow a European coordination will be attempted at the extraordinary Summit of EU leaders which will take place in the afternoon via video conference.

Mr. Mitsotakis, at the same time, on his own initiative, called Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan earlier in the afternoon, after the phone call he had last night with Egyptian President Al Sisi.

Common ground for Mr. Mitsotakis and Mr. Erdogan was the need not to extend the humanitarian crisis beyond borders, which can also translate into new migration flows.

It is a given, however, that Greece and Turkey have different perspectives on the ongoing situation, but this does not prevent the two leaders from discussing.

Especially since the process of discussions at the level of Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the positive agenda and the political dialogue is underway in Athens.
