PM Mitsotakis: What we achieved in Europe is unique in our history – Interview (video)

The European Parliament is the most democratic of all our institutional bodies

Newsroom March 19 04:03

For the stakes of the June European elections and the rising anti-European voices, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke to Euronews.

“I believe that these elections are particularly significant for Europe as a whole, given the broader economic and geopolitical context. They take place in a period of great turmoil, with a war raging on the eastern side of Europe, a major humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, as Europe emerges from a very difficult five-year period,” Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized on the “Global Conversation” program of the Euronews television network.

The Prime Minister continued, saying, “I also believe it is an opportunity to take stock of what we have achieved during the last European electoral cycle and to highlight the significant successes of the European Union. Through the cooperation of all institutional bodies, we have successfully defended ourselves against the pandemic. We created ‘NextGenerationEU,’ which is of particular importance for countries like Greece, as it helps boost growth and facilitates green and digital transition. Despite the predictions of some of our opponents, we stand united regarding Ukraine. And now we must focus on the next cycle and ensure that we are adequately prepared to address new, upcoming challenges.”

Referring to the essence of the European Union’s functioning, Kyriakos Mitsotakis notes that “we must acknowledge that what we have achieved in Europe is unique in global history. We voluntarily transferred powers to a supranational entity, and the proper balance between decision-making at the European and national levels must operate on a daily basis. However, I will say it again, this may be the ‘price’ in order for us to reap the benefits of our participation in the European Union.
