The modern trend of “twin destinations” is highlighted in a Travel Weekly investigation, suggesting the five best unconventional islands of Greece that offer unique travel escapes without the cosmopolitanism of the respective established names of Greek tourism.
At the top of Travel Weekly’s “secret five” list is Astypalaia, which according to the popular British medium “is one of the best-kept secrets of the Dodecanese, resembling a butterfly and boasting traditional whitewashed villages, stunning sunsets and fantastic beaches. Everything you’ve ever dreamed of, minus the crowds.”
They are followed by Milos, Symi, Paxos and Ithaca. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the five islands that are always in the spotlight are Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Corfu and Kos.
The article points out that the need for new undiscovered destinations is becoming more intense every year, as evidenced by online searches worldwide.
It is noted that British journalists and travel agents showed great interest in the sustainable innovations, alternative activities and beauties of Astypalaia, which were presented by the mayor of the island Nikos Komeneas at the international tourism exhibition in London, WTM, in the context of the sustainability marathon organised by the UK National Tourist Board.
“Astypalaia is becoming a sustainable destination, unique by global standards.
The response of travellers has been remarkable to the changes. We expect a tourist year with very good dynamics,” said the Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Astypalaia Costas Kambylis.
