Civil Protection: Very high fire risk for tomorrow, Friday 28 June

Civil Protection advises citizens to be particularly careful & avoid actions in the countryside that can cause a fire

A high risk fire alert is in effect for tomorrow, Friday June 28, 2024, the Ministry of Climate & Civil Protection says.

According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the ministry’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection, a very high fire risk (risk category 4) is forecast for tomorrow for the following areas:

– Region of Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos)

– Region of Peloponnese (Messinia)

– Region of Crete (Lassithi)

– Region of North Aegean (Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria)

– Region of South Aegean (Rhodes, Karpathos)

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection (civilprotection.gov.gr) has informed the competent government departments involved, as well as the regions and the municipalities of the above-mentioned regions, in order to be in increased readiness for civil protection in order to deal immediately with any fire incidents.

At the same time, it recommends that citizens should be particularly careful and avoid actions in the countryside that can cause a fire by negligence, such as burning dry grass and branches or cleaning debris, using machinery that causes sparks such as circular saws, welding devices, the use of outdoor barbecues, smoking bees, throwing lit cigarettes, etc.ά. It is also reminded that during the fire season it is prohibited to burn fields.

In case of noticing a fire, citizens are requested to immediately notify the Fire Service at the call number 199.
