Suspense escalates as the tomb of Amphipolis reveals its secrets one by one.
At the same time, new questions are after the discovery of the head of one of the two Sphinxes which adorned the entryway to the marvelous tomb. Questions still arise, however, since the scenario of tomb raiders having pillaged the tomb rears its ugly head once more. It is obvious that the head of the Sphinx could not be placed there during the construction of the monument. Something like that would be illogical. The most likely of scenarios is that it was transferred at a different time and after destructive effects had been inflicted on the inside of the tomb from natural or unnatural causes.
At present it is extremely difficult to accurately portray the actions of any potential tomb raiders which might have decapitated the statues at the entrance. The question on whether the second head, of the western Sphinx will be found is still outstanding, but there are no guesses as of yet.
Meanwhile, two photographs from the Sphinxes found in the Serapeum of Egypt, where Ptolemy took Alexander’s body raise questions about their likeness.
