A marble asymmetrical rock will soon be erected on the marble pier located on the old beach of Thessaloniki. A metal tree will be rooted above it with its branches outstretched towards the sky. At the base of the tree and on the branches there will be scattered leaves to mark the continuation of life after the tragic accident at Tempe.
The sculpture entitled “The tree of memory (the end)” will be placed in Thessaloniki, the end of a railway route that began in Athens. At the same time, a twin work, “The tree of souls (the beginning)”, but different in image and form, is to be constructed and placed in Athens. In that sculpture, at the ends of the tree’s branches will be 57 golden birds, each with the name and age of each victim of the accident on it.
The Municipal Council of the Municipality of Thessaloniki approved the placement of the sculpture “The tree of memory (the end)” following a donation by the Association of Victims of Tempi. A relevant letter – a donation proposal had been sent to the Municipality of Thessaloniki by the president of the Association Maria Karystianou, the artist Maria Mandaki and the blacksmith George Santexis.
