Four arrests have been made by Police officers, following the work accident yesterday, Wednesday 24/7, where a 63-year-old worker died, while another member of the private crew carrying out work on a Cyprus-flagged ship at the Salamis shipyards was slightly injured.
Officers of the 3rd Port Department of Salamina arrested the first mate, the chief engineer, the safety technician of the passenger-cargo-truck-truck (P/C/C/T/C) vessel, as well as the legal representative of the private crew carrying out repair and maintenance work on the vessel. A case was filed against them for manslaughter by negligence and physical injury by negligence under articles of the PC and PD 70/1990 (Health and Safety of Workers in Shipbuilding), as applicable, while the authorized natural person of the ship’s management company is wanted in the context of auto-circumstances.
According to the investigations of the Coast Guard officials, during the work, the ship’s catapult gave way, resulting in the fatal injury of the 63-year-old man, who was rescued with the assistance of the Fire Service.
The 22-year-old injured man was initially evacuated to the local Health Centre and then to the Thriasio Hospital where he was discharged.
