The large fire that broke out yesterday at noon in southern Rethymno, in the areas of Amari and Agios Vasileiou, has been rekindled. Strong firefighting forces are operating to extinguish the fire while four aerial means, two helicopters and two airplanes, were raised and are carrying out continuous water drops.

In Rethymno and at the front of the fire are the deputy chief of the Fire Department Nikos Roumeliotis, the deputy chief of Civil Protection Vassilis Papageorgiou and chief of staff George Markoulakis, according to neakriti.

On Thursday morning there were many small and scattered outbreaks without a large active front, however the forces that remained in the area continued to operate intensively. However, strong winds and the large extent of the fire front are the reasons for the constant reignitions that are occurring.

Essentially half of Crete’s firefighting force is on the ground, while forces from Athens continue to operate.

However, after the overnight operation of about 250 firefighters, who were battling the flames focus by focus, the picture on Thursday morning was clearly better than in the evening, but the bet for the firefighting forces is to extinguish every small smoldering fire that causes constant flare-ups, dangerous to escape at any time.
