Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra to perform at New York’s iconic Carnegie hall

The Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra (ELSON) is set to achieve a major milestone by performing at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York City - This marks a significant achievement in the orchestra’s already impressive journey, further solidifying its international presence

Newsroom October 24 11:49

The orchestra, founded in 2017 by renowned musician Dionysis Grammenos, has become a symbol of the potential and dynamism of young Greek musicians. “It’s an extraordinary honor for a Greek orchestra, especially one made up of young musicians, to perform at Carnegie Hall,” said Grammenos.

The program for the Carnegie Hall performance includes a selection of notable works, such as Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story and the Greek Dances by Nikos Skalkottas, which had their American debut at Carnegie Hall exactly 70 years ago.

Also featured will be the composition “Rewind” by British Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne, one of the most sought-after contemporary composers globally.

Grammenos emphasized the importance of this performance as a testament to the growth of the orchestra, which started with just 30 musicians.

“Today, ELSON reflects the vast talent and promise of young Greek musicians, demonstrating their ability to perform on the world stage,” he stated. The orchestra has also gained international recognition, having performed at Berlin’s Konzerthaus in August 2023, earning high praise from critics.

During their stay in New York, ELSON musicians will also visit the newly built St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in Manhattan.

ELSON is supported by various institutions, including the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the Hellenic Parliament, and the Ministry of Culture, among others. It is also the Orchestra in Residence at the Athens Concert Hall and represents Greece in the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras.

Before heading to New York, the orchestra will perform at the Athens Concert Hall on October 30, 2024.
