Teachers and professors to strike on Wednesday – How schools will operate

Significant disruption is expected across the country on Wednesday, November 20, due to a 24-hour general strike called by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) and the Civil Servants' Confederation (ADEDY)

Newsroom November 19 07:45

The entire educational community, including the Federation of Secondary Education Teachers (OLME), the Greek Primary Teachers’ Federation (DOE), the Federation of Private School Teachers (OIELE), and the Federation of Special Education Staff (POSEEPEA), will join the strike. In many cases, schools will remain closed, and the strike will alter the schedules of schools across all levels of education.

Educators from both public and private sectors are expected to participate, citing demands related to education and salary increases.

According to OIELE’s announcement, private educators are striking to demand the reinstatement of collective bargaining rights in private tutoring centers, foreign language schools, and vocational training institutes (formerly IEKs), as well as salary increases and the reinstatement of holiday bonuses in private schools.

The announcement emphasizes that teachers must work in dignified conditions with fair compensation, stating, “Educators must enter their classrooms with their heads held high, not humiliated and exhausted.”

However, the strike does not necessarily mean a full shutdown of schools or a complete halt to classes. Many educators participating in the mobilization have already informed parents and students.

In primary education, teachers typically notify parents in advance if classes will be disrupted so that they can plan accordingly. However, this notification is not mandatory. If a teacher is not participating in the strike, classes will proceed as usual. Conversely, if a teacher responsible for extended-day programs joins the strike, parents are advised to be informed beforehand.

Regarding high schools and lyceums, if a teacher strikes, students will either have a free period or alternative coverage, but they are still required to remain at school.

As for municipal nurseries and daycare centers, their operation might also be affected due to the participation of POE-OTA employees in the strike. Since no uniform announcement applies to all municipal facilities, with each municipality acting based on decisions by its employees, parents should check with local authorities about what will happen tomorrow.
