Kappa Research: the findings that stood out in 2024 – Unemployment, brain gain, the economy and abstention in the European elections

The analysts of Kappa Research described 2024 as a year of transition to a new uncharted era - The changes that are observed in Greek society

Newsroom December 30 03:34

Shifting attitudes in Greek society, Kapa Research, which has selected, for another year, the ten most important findings from its surveys implemented throughout the year.

Calling 2024 “a year of transition to a new uncharted era”, the company’s analysts recorded the major changes in Greek society, explored the electoral climate in 10 EU countries just before the European elections in June of 2024, as part of a research mega-project, and collected data on the business environment in 13 countries on three different continents.

The ten findings for Greece:

1. unemployment is no longer considered a key problem for the country

Unlike in previous years, Greek citizens now rank accuracy, health and crime as the most important problems.

2. Brain gain: highly educated workforce returns

According to research by Kappa Research, the improving economy, labour market and political stability are favouring the repatriation of Greeks from the brain drain, who bring with them new qualifications and skills.

3. The harsh anti-Germanism of the crisis is receding

At the same time, the anti-German sentiment, which was strong during the crisis period, was found to be receding.

The German government’s support for the German government has also been reduced.

The timing of the crisis and the withdrawal of its protagonists from the scene blunted the differences. The economic difficulties that Germany is currently facing are creating understanding.

4. The charm of tourism is receding, shifting to production.

The allure of tourism is also less enticing, as in 2024 the first signs of saturation appeared in the perception of its contribution to the Greek economy. Instead, public opinion emphasizes the developmental value of agricultural and industrial production.

5. The image of the economy passes through party filters.

“Tell me what party you are, and I’ll tell you what you think about the economy.” Research shows that perceptions of the country’s economic situation are influenced by party preferences.

6. Business: Easy to establish hard to “get out”.

The World Bank ranked Greece first in the world in terms of ease of starting a new business.
The World Bank is the world’s leading country in terms of ease of doing business in the world.

However, in our country, it seems that the relationship between profit and operating costs remains difficult.

7. Illegal gambling remains flourishing in Greece

Approximately 900,000 people gamble in an unlicensed environment in Greece. Although winnings are not guaranteed, they are attracted by the anonymity and higher returns.

8. Cost of living and immigration determined the European elections

Citizens in 10 EU countries in a Politico survey ahead of the European elections highlighted their concerns about cost and immigration.

9. Disdain for the political system explains the absence.

Abstainers are not an a-political category, politically neutral. They are an anti-political category, distrusting or opposing traditional politics.
