The director of the National Weather Service, Thodoros Kolydas, agrees with the general assessment of meteorologists that from Sunday there will be snowfall in areas of northern Greece.
According to his post on X “the criteria of the upper atmosphere (Temperatures at 500 and 850 hPa) are met – even if marginally – and this will result in many areas of snowfall even at lower altitudes.”
However, regarding forecasts for specific areas, such as Thessaloniki, Kolydas asks “to wait another two days.”
As he explains for Thessaloniki, “Only one of the four main forecast models gives snowfall as of Sunday afternoon.”
Kolydas’ post on the weather and snow from Sunday
Snow in northern Greece
✅Good morning and happy birthday. In the last few days there has been a lot of talk about the snow predicted from Sunday in Northern Greece. The upper atmosphere criteria (Temperatures at 500 and 850 hPa) are met – even if only marginally – and this will result in many areas experiencing snowfall even at lower altitudes.
✅The specific forecast for specific areas, such as for Thessaloniki, has not yet been clarified, as only one of the four main forecast models gives snowfall from Sunday afternoon, as shown in the relevant meteorogram. It is therefore advisable to wait for another two days to see if the forecast data is verified. EMY will give you timely and accurate information.
✅ Weather and especially snow is true “news”, but it doesn’t have to be the first, especially when we still have many days ahead of us before it starts to manifest.
