Haris Dukas: “The new route of the Half Marathon to be embraced by runners of all levels”

Meeting of the Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas with the President of SEGAS Sofia Sakorafa

Newsroom January 21 01:20

The Athens Half Marathon is the premier running event, held exclusively within the boundaries of the municipality and this year will take place for the 13th year, on Sunday 9 March. In this context and given the start of registration, the meeting between the Mayor of Athens Harris Doukas, and the president of SEGAS Sofia Sakorafa took place at the Municipal Hall.

At the meeting, they had the opportunity to discuss the struggle and the joint actions they will develop. The change of route created new data, as uphill parts were removed and a flatter and deeper route emerged, capable of giving fast performances to the participants. In addition, the new route highlights important historical and cultural monuments of the city.

“Athens loves sport and has become an international racing destination. Athletes from all over the world choose to participate in its sporting events,” he added: “The city offers a unique setting in which the games are held, the people are hospitable and encouraging, the weather is usually an ally and so the games are held in the best conditions. We want the new route of this year’s Half Marathon, which is faster and more attractive, to be embraced by runners of all levels.”

For her part, Sakorafa said: “We are at the starting point of the exciting journey of the SEGAS Half Marathon. SEGAS and the Municipality of Athens are marching together, with great success, in an institution that this year completes 13 years of life. Together, the Federation of Classic Sports with Mayor Haris Doukas and his staff, have taken care to create a beautiful sporting and cultural celebration that will satisfy all those who participate, while at the same time highlighting the treasures of the historic center of Athens.”

Those interested will be able to register until February 20, however, if the number of participants per race is reached earlier, then registration for that race will be closed.

Simultaneously with the 13th Athens Half Marathon, the Panhellenic Half Marathon Road Championships will also be held. The program of the races includes the 5 km. OPAP, but also the Family Run Piraeus, which introduces the children of primary school to the magical world of running.
