The shutdown comes after another strain of avian influenza was found in dairy cattle in the U.S., raising concerns about the ongoing virus outbreak in the country.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the five-day suspension will allow for cleaning and disinfection of markets in the city and in Westchester, Suffolk, and Nassau counties to prevent further spread of the disease.
Since January 31, bird flu cases have been confirmed in markets located in Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn, according to officials.
“I have directed state agencies to use all available resources to ensure we take every necessary step to keep public risk at a minimum,” Hochul emphasized.
