UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq referred to the visit of Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Rosemary Di Carlo, to Cyprus during a press briefing, emphasizing that she discussed with the leaders of both sides the future course of the Cyprus issue in light of the upcoming informal expanded meeting.
“The Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Rosemary Di Carlo, is visiting Cyprus. Today, Ms. Di Carlo met separately with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides and Mr. Ersin Tatar, respectively, to discuss the future course of the Cyprus issue and the preparation of an informal meeting in a broader format,” said Mr. Haq.
Mr. Haq stressed that in both meetings, Di Carlo reaffirmed the United Nations’ ongoing commitment to peace on the island.
“During her stay in Cyprus, Di Carlo also met with women’s groups and highlighted that women’s participation in peace efforts is not just a matter of justice and equality, but a smart approach to peacebuilding. Ms. Di Carlo urged the leaders to work with them and other representatives of civil society and to incorporate their perspectives,” noted Mr. Haq.
