In response, the Paris City Council has announced a dedicated fund of €100,000 to support the hip-hop scene, including music, dance, and visual arts.

“Recognizing that existing support mechanisms are rarely utilized by hip-hop artists and event organizers, the City of Paris has decided to create a dedicated financial aid program for them,” said Karine Royan, Paris’ Deputy Mayor for Culture, in a press release.

The funding will be distributed through a selection process overseen by La Place, a cultural center in Paris established in 2016 that focuses exclusively on hip-hop. Artists can submit their proposals until early May, with a maximum grant of €10,000 per project.

“The goal is to address the long-standing challenges hip-hop professionals and artists face in accessing public or private funding,” explained Julien Soléva, director of La Place, in an interview with Agence France-Presse.

He emphasized that while mainstream French rap enjoys commercial success, many other hip-hop artists struggle to sustain their careers. “For decades, there has been a lack of support compared to other artistic fields,” he noted, highlighting the importance of preserving artistic diversity, including less mainstream rap styles.
