F1 2025: The season opener – What to expect this weekend

Formula 1 is back, and the 2025 season kicks off in style at Melbourne’s iconic Albert Park Circuit

Newsroom March 14 02:00

After months of speculation, testing, and driver moves, it’s time to see who really has the pace as the first race weekend gets underway.

Flat Out from the Start

With no more strategic testing runs or sandbagging, this is where teams and drivers show their true performance. Albert Park’s street circuit is known for its unpredictability, and with rain in the forecast, we could be in for a dramatic opening round.

Key Talking Points

  • Piastri’s New Contract
Australian driver Oscar Piastri has secured his future with McLaren, signing a contract extension until 2028. Reports suggest he will earn around 20 million euros per season, matching teammate Lando Norris. McLaren appears to be giving both drivers equal status for the championship fight.
  • Ferrari’s True Pace
Lando Norris has suggested that Ferrari was not showing its full potential in pre-season testing and could be much stronger than expected in Melbourne. Are they ready to challenge Red Bull from the first race?
  • Red Bull and the Mini-DRS Controversy
Christian Horner’s team has raised concerns that Ferrari and McLaren may have used a rear-wing trick in Bahrain. With stricter FIA checks beginning this weekend, it remains to be seen if any teams will be affected. Even so, Max Verstappen has downplayed Red Bull’s chances of winning in Melbourne.
  • Mercedes Under the Radar
The German team has been relatively quiet leading up to the season opener, but some insiders believe they have made significant progress. Could they surprise everyone in Australia?

The Track and Tyres

Albert Park’s 5.278 km circuit has become faster in recent years after layout changes. With four DRS zones, expect a focus on low-downforce setups and plenty of overtaking opportunities.

  • Pirelli’s Tyre Selection:
    • Hard (C3)
    • Medium (C4)
    • Soft (C5)
The asphalt is smooth, leading to lower tyre wear, but graining could still be a factor. Last season, most teams opted for a two-stop strategy.
  • Past Winners in Melbourne:
    • 2022 – Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
    • 2023 – Max Verstappen (Red Bull)
    • 2024 – Carlos Sainz (Ferrari)
