Probe uncovers info that notorious felon may know identity of GD pair’s assassins

45-year-old Panagiotis Vlastos is one of the most notorious criminals in Greece.

Newsroom January 18 08:07

Convicted murderer and racketeer Panagiotis Vlastos may possess information with  regard to the murder of Manolis Kapelonis and Giorgos Fountoulis, two members of the far right Golden Dawn party, who were shot dead on November 1, 2013 by unknown gunmen.

According to evidence included in the case file the Greek Police compiled in the context of an investigation into a huge prison-run extortion ring, Vlastos, the alleged leader of the criminal network, knows the names of the perpetrators of the shooting.

Specifically, a relative of the felon has testified that during a prison visit, Vlastos said he knew who shot the two GD members, although he himself had nothing to do with the attack.

In fact, Vlastos allegedly said the white helmets worn by the perpetrators during the attack belonged to him.

45-year-old Vlastos is one of the most notorious criminals in Greece. He was first arrested in 1994 for the murder of two members of a rival criminal gang.

He has also been convicted as the mastermind of the kidnapping of shipping tycoon Pericles Panagopoulos and sentenced to life in prison.

While awaiting trial for the kidnapping, Vlastos tried to escape in December 2011 from Korydallos prison along with three members of a violent self-styled anarchist group, Conspiracy Nuclei of Fire.
