Donald Trump, hosting Giorgia Meloni at the White House, expressed confidence that a trade deal with the European Union on tariffs is on the horizon.
“There will be a trade deal – 100%,” said the U.S. president, adding, “It will be a fair deal.”
In remarks to reporters before sitting down for lunch with the Italian Prime Minister, Trump said trade negotiations with other countries are “going very well.” However, he stressed that the U.S. is “not in a hurry” to finalize talks.
“The United States was tricked and taken advantage of by virtually every country in the world. That’s not going to happen anymore – but we will make fair deals,” he said, adding that a “very good deal” with China is also in the works.
“A Great Prime Minister, Doing a Fantastic Job”
Trump also praised Meloni, calling her “a great prime minister” and saying she’s doing “a fantastic job” in Italy.
“We are proud of her. I’ve known her since the beginning of her term. I knew right away she had great talent. She is one of the true leaders of the world. I’m very proud to be with her,” he said.
Meloni Wants a Trump–EU Leaders Meeting
Meloni, for her part, voiced certainty that the EU would reach a trade agreement on tariffs with the U.S. Her goal for the meeting with Trump was to have an honest conversation about each country’s needs and to find the best way for both to grow stronger.
She also stated her intention to invite President Trump to Italy, as she hopes to arrange a meeting between him and European leaders.
“I’m confident we can make a deal. I’m here to help with that,” Meloni said.
“I think the best way is just to talk honestly.”
