Sotiris Georgountzos to Protothema: “When Kalamata reaches the first division, I’ll jump into the harbor”

The sports journalist who divides opinion with his outbursts and tears speaks on the “Proti Lexi” podcast – His political proposals, the beatings he… escapes from opposing fans, and the women of his life who marry others

Newsroom April 25 11:54

Others say he is the most loyal Greek fan, the man who loves his team more than anyone else. On the other hand, some argue that his outbursts and tears after losses are just a show to gain publicity. In Kalamata’s recent failure to reach the First Division, losing to Kifisia in the final minute, sports journalist Sotiris Georgountzos once again did his thing. He exploded, cried, cursed, and divided both his supporters and critics.

Speaking on the podcast of Proto Thema, he didn’t cry at all. However, he did say he had the worst Easter of his life, as the resurrection of his team to the First Division never happened. When Kalamata eventually reaches the First Division, he swears he will jump into the city’s harbor fully clothed.

“Proti Lexi” with Antonis Sroiter: Interview with Sotiris Georgountzos

Of course, this is all if politics or acting hasn’t won him over by then. As he reveals, he has received many proposals to run for parliament and believes he would win the most votes in the city. If he doesn’t make it to the parliament, he might choose an artistic career, as he has already acted in TV series, calling it one of the best experiences of his life. He has been offered to participate in reality shows but refuses to discuss it, as he can’t stand the hunger and hardship involved.

Away from the stadiums and broadcasts, Sotiris Georgountzos describes himself as a… lamb. He doesn’t argue because he’s shy, and if he says something a bit too much to opposing fans, he apologizes. He claims he’s escaped getting beaten up several times because he knows how to make peace with his opponents at the last minute.

In 2020, he had to… fight against the coronavirus, being one of the first Greeks to get sick. He was at risk and spent a long time in the hospital.

That experience made him see life differently, and he changed a lot in his thinking. What didn’t change, though, is his relationship status, as he remains single. For some reason, he says, the women in his life leave him and marry others. Therefore, the woman of his life remains his lawyer sister, who has saved him from the 39 lawsuits he has accumulated so far.
