Wieser-Costello: They came, they saw, they left

Both sides are expected to lay most of their cards on the table in Wednesday’s crucial meeting.

Newsroom February 9 10:19

Euroworking group chief Thomas Wieser and European Commission representative Declan Costello have departed on Monday morning from Athens, after their visit in the Greek capital which lasted only for a few hours.

Two days ahead of the extraordinary Eurogroup meeting on February 11, the two officials arrived late on Sunday to Athens in order to meet with a government delegation and help them better prepare the Greek presentation in view of the critical event.

Weiser and Costello have reportedly met with Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragasakis.

It should be noted that Thomas Wieser visit to Athens was the second one in the last 10 days.

Another factor which is expected to play an important role in the upcoming confrontation between Greece and its European partners is the appointment of NYC-based financial consultant and international banking asset manager Lazard as a ministry adviser on the Greek debt mega-issue.

Both sides are expected to lay most of their cards on the table in Wednesday’s crucial meeting. The Greek government will reiterate its demand for a 3-month bridge deal until a new agreement is negotiated, instead of asking for an extension, as the country’s creditors would suggest.

Based on the speech Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras gave yesterday in the Greek parliament, the negotiations are expected to last for 15 days.

“The plan we intend to present to them is already completed,” said the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
