Heatwave hits Greece: Temperatures exceed 40°C

According to Meteo, the maximum temperature was recorded in Skala in Messinia, followed by Sparta and Gortyna in Heraklion

Greece experienced extreme heat on Monday, with several areas recording temperatures well above seasonal averages. The highest temperature was recorded in Skala, Messinia, reaching a scorching 40.6°C, according to data from Meteo of the National Observatory of Athens.

  • Skala (Messinia): 40.6°C
  • Sparti: 39.3°C
  • Gortyna (Heraklion): 38.9°C
  • Mystras (Laconia): 38.9°C
  • Agii Theodoroi (Corinthia): 38.8°C
  • Kosmio (Komotini): 38.8°C
  • Vari (Attica): 38.8°C
  • Argos: 38.8°C
  • Komotini (Korios): 38.5°C

In total, 64 out of 531 weather stations recorded temperatures above 37°C, while 193 stations exceeded 35°C. The average maximum temperature nationwide was 33.3°C.

Tuesday Weather Forecast – July 14

The National Meteorological Service predicts mostly clear weather, with some afternoon cloud development over the mainland. Local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in Epirus, Macedonia, western Central Greece, and Thessaly, especially in mountainous areas.

  • West Greece: North–northwest winds at 3–5 Beaufort; up to 6 in the Ionian Sea
  • East Greece: North winds at 4–6 Beaufort; up to 7 in the Aegean

  • Temperatures: 18–37°C (cooler in western Macedonia)

Ionian Islands, Epirus, West Central Greece, West Peloponnese

  • Cloudy in the afternoon with local showers or storms in the mountains
  • Winds: North–northwest 3–5 Beaufort; 6 in the Ionian
  • Temperatures: 19–37°C (up to 34°C on the islands; lower in interior Epirus)

East Central Greece, Evia, East Peloponnese

  • Mostly sunny with some afternoon mountain clouds
  • Winds: North 3–5 Beaufort; locally up to 6
  • Temperatures: 22–38°C

Cyclades & Crete

  • Clear skies
  • Winds: North–northwest 4–6 Beaufort; up to 7 in Cyclades
  • Temperatures: 23–34°C (southern Crete may reach 36°C)

  • Mostly clear, some clouds, and possible storms in the mountains
  • Winds: Variable 3–4 Beaufort; 4–5 in coastal areas and Sporades
  • Temperatures: 19–38°C (Sporades up to 32°C)
