In an article entitled “Can Greek Businesses Even Survive,” the Wall Street Journal describes the effects the political uncertainty has on Greek businesses and tourism sector in particular.

Stating that leftist SYRIZA’s rise to power last month “has reignited fears the country could separate from the euro,” WSJ notes that the new government is under extreme time constraints to reach a compromise.

According to the article, Greece’s tourism sector, the largest industry in the country, is starting to worry, as political uncertainty in Greece has caused delays, at a time when many European tour operators are finalizing their plans for the summer.

Moreover, new hotel projects and other investments were also put on hold, the article says.

“Many people are reconsidering investments,” says hotelier Andreas Andreadis, head of the Greek Tourism Federation. “They want to wait and see.”

According to Andreadis, there has been a “considerable drop” in the number of bookings by Germans in recent weeks. However, the hotelier says that the season will be rescued if the Greek government “resolves its conflict with Europe soon.”
