Queen Olga Avenue returns to traffic after years – “It eases congestion and highlights Athens,” says Doukas

According to the Mayor of Athens, the aim is to improve the flow of vehicles and easy access to the points of historical interest.

Newsroom August 14 03:24

Queen Olga Avenue in central Athens is reopening to traffic after years of closure, according to Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.

In a statement, he noted that after months of intensive work, Queen Olga Avenue is back on the city’s daily transport map, aiming to reduce downtown congestion, enhance public spaces, and provide easy access to historic sites.

Traffic on Queen Olga Avenue had been halted since 2020, when it was included as part of the pilot “Great Walk” urban project.

The pedestrianization from Vassilissis Konstantinou to the ancient sites along Leoforos Amalias has been completed, as well as the redevelopment connecting Queen Olga Avenue with the Zappeion. By the end of August, the section from Ardittou Street to the Columns of Olympian Zeus will also be open.

“Queen Olga Avenue is becoming a road that unites the city, eases traffic, and showcases the Athens we want,” said Haris Doukas.

Mayor Haris Doukas’ Post:

Queen Olga Avenue Returns to Traffic!

After months of intensive work, the iconic avenue is back on Athens’ daily transport map.

Objectives:

  • Reduce downtown congestion
  • Improve traffic flow
  • Upgrade public spaces
  • Ensure convenient access to historic sites

Already completed:

  • A new green space offering shade and relaxation for pedestrians
  • Pedestrianization from Vassilissis Konstantinou to the ancient sites along Leoforos Amalias
  • Redevelopment connecting Queen Olga Avenue with the Zappeion

On the opposite side, another pedestrian-friendly area is being created with low-traffic streets and a functioning tram. Every step along this route reveals the city’s history, with valuable archaeological findings from different eras.
