Subsidence on the Ioannina – Athens National Road near the Pedini junction: Second traffic lane also at risk – See photo

The fault that began in November 2024 is growing dangerously – Concern for driver safety

Newsroom September 8 01:12

The serious subsidence problem on the Ioannina – Athens National Road, near the Pedini junction, is worsening day by day, now putting the second traffic lane at risk as well.

Specifically, according to epiruspost.gr, the subsidence first appeared in November 2024 on the lane from Athens to Ioannina, resulting in one lane being closed for months. However, in recent days, new cracks have appeared extending to the other lane, causing significant concern for drivers who pass through the area daily. The fault appears to be continuously expanding, increasing the risk for vehicles, especially with the upcoming period of heavy rainfall.

The problem had been partly attributed to flood control interventions carried out in the area, as well as the presence of a sinkhole. To address it, the Epirus Region approved interventions in June totaling approximately €150,000.

The works included:

  • Construction of a new slope with boulders
  • Expansion of the retention basin for improved stormwater drainage
  • Removal of surface soil materials up to 4 meters deep
  • Reconstruction of the roadway with graded materials

Additionally, geotechnical and geophysical surveys, as well as penetration drillings for water management, have been carried out. However, after inspecting the site and studying the behavior of the infrastructure over the past months, it was deemed necessary to carry out supplementary works.
