CNBC: Yanis seeks ‘treasure’ in hunt for tax dodgers

CNBC reports that the 4-month extension will give Greece time to restore the confidence in its relations with EU partners

Newsroom February 25 11:56

Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis spoke to CNBC following the Eurogroup’s approval on Tuesday of a mandated list of reforms the leftist Greek government submitted to its eurozone partners cum creditors.

He told the US network that the Greek government’s priority is a crackdown on tax evasion — a decades-old pledge by numerous Greek governments in succession.

“How much money do we expect?” Varoufakis asked, almost rhetorically. “We do not know, it is like an archaeological dig. You never know what exactly you will find. Hopefully you might find a great treasure. I am sure that we will find a treasure. The question is if we have the means to do so.”

He added that “when a cash flow problem exists but the long-term data is good, we are certain that Europe will deal with this problem. Can you imagine Europe facing the risk of dissolution for a couple of billion euros?” he asked.
